My mother could take a box of Hershey's Cocoa and produce a wonderland of culinary treasures. My brother and I convinced her that we could not drink milk unless it was hot cocoa. She wanted us to drink milk; so she made us hot cocoa. She taught me how to do it when I was quite young.
The cake! She could make an old-fashioned chocolaty chocolate cake with the fudge frosting that she could make perfectly by cooking it until it was in a soft-ball stage. We found a cake like that at a church bake sell this week. Awww! So good! The candy, the brownies, chocolate pudding . . . her food was marvelous all because of the good old-fashioned cocoa.
Many members of my family and many of my friends love Hershey's cocoa too. Is there any other brand? Here's a neat little recipe that is hard to find these days. This one, along with several others, is in Flavored with Love: Mary Lou's Family and Friends Can Cook. A friend gave it to me, and Paul and I cooked it on a local early morning television show.
Chocolate Drops
2 cups sugar
¼ cup cocoa (Hershey's, of course!)
½ cup evaporated milk
1 stick margarine
½ cup peanut butter
2 teaspoons vanilla
3 cups minute oats
Bring the mixture to a rolling boil and let it boil for 1 minute. Drop by teaspoons onto waxed paper.
Adding 1/2 cup of toasted pecans enhances the texture and taste of these delicious cookies.
I'm very glad that Amazon has started stocking this product. It is an American classic. I always have it in my kitchen.
