My sister sent me a bar of this for for birthday, just as something new to try. I don't have any issues with sugar, and I think she purchased this thinking it was a "healthy" alternative to chocolate. Here's the ingredient list on amazon: Isomalt, citric acid, coconut oil; natural and artificial flavors, malic acid, acesulfame potassium, salt, red 40, yellow, 5, yellow 6, blue 1.
Now, here's the list on my 3.5oz. wrapper: Maltitol, Cocoa butter, whole milk powder, cocoa mass, inulin (natural vegetable fiber), soy lecithin, natural vanilla.
I don't understand why there's a huge difference in the ingredients lists. My bar is 0.5 oz. bigger but everything else is the same. There is also a warning on the label that excess consumption may have a laxative effect. The sugar alcohol (isomalt or maltitol) as well as the inulin cause gastro-intestinal distress and bloating for a lot of people. Inulin can be found in yogurts, high-fiber food bars, and in way too many other foods, in my opinion. Chickory root is often used as a ingredient in higher-fiber fake-foods for its inulin content from what I understand.
The taste: I guess if I were a diabetic, this would be a real alternative to regular chocolate. But it has a weird malty taste to it and the texture is not like real chocolate. I think it's chalkier and drier, if anything. Not a horrible alternative, but I won't be buying any for myself.
