(More customer reviews)When this product came out in the early 1980's, it was a prescription medicine. At that time, my doctor told me that he had never prescribed it, but that it might help me with my severe lactose intolerance. It worked so well that I have continued to use it for more than twenty-five years. It is now over the counter and is available at almost any pharmacy, although they may have to special order it. One capsule is sufficient for me to be able to eat almost any lactose-containing food for about an hour. For foods containing condensed or evaporated milk, such as desserts, and which are normally eaten at the end of the meal, I use a second capsule. Somehow, Cheese-Whiz still bothers me regardless, but I digress.... I carry six or eight of these capsules in a small pill box and have it with me all day. I just take one lactrase capsule at the beginning of the meal. It works out great, and that is why I continue to use them. When you think about it, the price of a lactrase capsule is very small compared to the cost of a meal, or compared to the discomfort of the indigestion. This med replaces an enzyme which is normally made in the body and which is necessary to digest lactose, a sugar found in milk. The enzyme does not leave the digestive tract and does not enter the blood stream, so it is pretty safe. The lactrase capsules are much stronger than the other similar brands and as a result they work better. The product is made well with good quality control, and is packaged well. A bottle of 100 capsules normally has a shelf life of over a year or so, but I use a bottle in about five weeks.
