Our son had feeding issues with regular formula, so we switched to Nutramigen, which he seemed to take much better. So we were satisfied at the time. However, later on, our son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS (on the autism spectrum). If you look up Dr. Russell Blaylock's work (he's a neurosurgeon and nutrionist), he lays out the risks of excess glutamates (what he calls excitotoxins) that would have a neurotoxic effect on a developing child's brain (I recommend the video at the bottom of this link: [...]). We just found out that Nutramigen has an extremely high level of glutamatic acid compared to other infant formulas (see [...], cross linked from the prior website referenced). There is absolutely no conscionable reason for any infant formula to have such high level of glutamic acid. Do your own research and be forewarned. We were not.
[UPDATE 2 YEARS AFTER ORIGINAL REVIEW: while I do not think at this point this formula was the cause of PDD-NOS (my hypothesis now is that it was caused by antibiotics given at 2 weeks of age on the advice of by a rather negligent pediatrician), I do think that one needs to weigh the cost / benefits of using this formula. Truth of the matter, b/c of the antibiotics which ruined my child's gut ecosystem, he developed leaky gut and a milk allergy as a result. There may have been no alternative but this formula, which he tolerated much better than anything else. So for that reason, the alternative being starvation (and he was awfully thin in any event due to his impaired gut), this was the best (and hence only) option available. Being high in glutamic acid is still a concern. As a parent, one should be informed as to the effects of various foods your child ingests, as different foods have different phisiological effects. One may find ways to mitigate the negative effects of glutamic acid as a result. For any parent who needs to use sensitive formula, I encourage them to look into leaky gut, explore the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, the Body Ecology Diet and the GAPS (Gut and Psychology Syndrome) Diet. They will help your child when they are old enough to eat solid foods, and following that diet will help heal any leaky gut problems you have (does take time and is a lot of hard work, but we're seeing real progress). Good luck to all.]
