(More customer reviews)For years I've used Nestlé chocolate chips because it's readily available and good quality. But I have a few recipes that call for milk chocolate, and since Nestlé uses vanillin in their milk chocolate chips (a flavor that I find cloying and artificial), I wanted to find a new milk chocolate for candy and baked goods. So I decided to conduct a taste test Guittard vs Ghirardelli, both of which contain real vanilla and not vanillin.
Both chocolates were very good, but Guittard came out on top, hands down. The texture had a nice snap, melted like silk on the tongue, and had a beautifully balanced flavor with toasted nut and caramel notes. Ghirardelli was grainier, melted a bit stickier but still velvety, and had a rich, roasted flavor. Unfortunately, the Ghirardelli also contained far less pleasant tangy, stand-out notes of cooked (UHT) milk and green coffee.
I was very impressed with the quality of Guittard milk chocolate chips, and surprised at the difference in flavors between the two.
